Tackling the research and design of software making life easier for construction workers/tradies on large-scale projects. Worked as a generalist product designer but early on while there was no product manager, I was also focussed on implementing product management practices such as analytics, experimentation and prioritisation based on customer and business value & problems. A key part of that was advocating for primary user research, and to be a company driven by actual user needs and not just what they say. Researched and implemented tools that got us quicker quant and qual feedback. That also developed into a qualitative research database that we could tap into. Got the engineering team more involved in ideation and seeing and hearing from the users.

I joined as the third product designer, and helped grow the team and practice as we went from just an EFTPOS company to a full business bank. Early designers were multi-disciplinary, so my activities throughout included leading research activities, to creating and testing prototypes, to visual design and implementation with engineers, to post-launch research activities. The majority of my time was spent on our unsecured lending product from day zero to launch. I worked closely with the lead PM on early research, observation, concepts, and testing with different lean UX methodologies out in the field with our existing customers. We validated some assumptions, but more importantly invalidated others.We fed our leanings into a company inception with a newly formed cross-functional division of software engineers, finance, and customer support. Within a few months we had our first working loans with high customer delight and minimal issues. We treated everything as a hypothesis and prioritised what we needed to find out now versus what we could find out through production.

The nature of the clients meant that every new project involved educating myself about new industries, business models, jobs and terminology. Projects involve working collaboratively from start to end with the visual designers, developers, PMs, clients and the end users to deliver a product that actually makes someone's lives easier. Responsibilities include running the initial workshops, interviews, shadowing/observation, analysis, sketching, wireframes, prototyping to various levels of fidelity, testing, iterating and communicating with the engineering team.

During my stint in the UX team, I had the opportunity to design across the whole suite (iOS, Android, Mac & PCs). Worked on visual designs, IA, wireframing, sketching and prototyping in varying capacities either independently or pairing with a senior designer. The most recent project involved doing user research and analysis around a TV-based sports app. Discovered punters' motivations around following teams and the lengths they go to to avoid spoilers. Solution fit work involved designing and building interactive Axure prototypes that had to work with remote controls.

Worked with the marketing team, product managers and the exec. producer to make sure the site was consistently relevant and useful to the customer. Being a large site meant the infrastructure would occasionally break down and in those instances we had to work closely with the in-house developers to find a solution. Got to design a lot of imagery, based on a style established by an agency, for athletes competing in Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games. The biggest challenge per event was to design 200+ images in a short timeline while also keeping the visuals and typography tight and making sure nothing went askew of the strict IOC guidelines.

I had to quickly learn the intricacies of the CMS and the quirks of creating and managing pages.
