This design was completed as part of a Christmas Design Competition set by SkillsRobin

The Challenge: Design a Christmas advent calendar which works on a mobile app.

The user must be able to

  • View the advent calendar and see 24 days
  • See what days have already been opened, and see what days are still closed
  • Open the next, unopened day
  • View the gift they've received

Design Inspiration

I drew inspiration from the festive nature of Christmas and the yearly advent calendars that some beauty stores put up for sale. The anticipation built up from waiting for a new reward day was something I wanted to emulate.

This led to me employing a minimal approach by using a grid-like pattern to display all the days including the current status of redemption.
This was to ensure that users do not get overwhelmed by a plethora of information and for the design to feel familiar yet fresh and lively.
I reviewed past advent calendar designs and this informed my final design.

The colours I used represented the Christmas spirit with varying shades depending on context. I also incorporated open-source 3D elements to add visual excitement and show activity based on the user’s goals.

To avoid clutter, I used popovers to show information on the day the user attempts to access.
